Additional Information

What to bring and how to prepare for your ultrasound

What information do I need to bring?

  • If you have had previous ultrasounds, CT scans or MRI of the pelvis, you can bring the images or the report with you.
  • We will ask you about your last menstrual period, so if you have this on hand before the ultrasound.

How do I prepare for my ultrasound?

  • Most of the time you need a full bladder so that we can image the cervix and lower uterus. Once we have taken those images, we will offer you the opportunity to empty your bladder.
  • The best way to achieve a full bladder without being too uncomfortable, is to empty your bladder ONE hour before the ultrasound. Then drink approximately 500mls of water in the hour leading up to the scan. Try not to empty your bladder again before the scan.
