About the Event
About
The Great Wheelbarrow Race is an iconic event that celebrates the pioneering spirit of the late 1800s when miners journeyed through Far North Queensland, pushing wheelbarrows laden with all their worldly possessions. Held annually along the Wheelbarrow Way, the race spans 140 kilometres from Mareeba to Chillagoe in Far North Queensland, retracing the path of these early trailblazers.
Participants form teams and take on this challenging yet rewarding race, either running or walking in relay sections while pushing a wheelbarrow—symbolic of the hardships faced by early settlers. The route showcases the stunning diversity of the region, from rich farmlands and wooded savannahs to historic towns and granite gorges. Competitors pass landmarks like the Savannahlander Rail Bridge, Granite Gorge, and Chillagoe’s iconic marble bluffs, making the journey as visually rewarding as it is physically demanding.
Beyond the physical challenge, the race is a community-driven event that raises funds for local charities, uniting teams, sponsors, and spectators in support of meaningful causes. It’s a true test of endurance, teamwork, and determination, with each kilometre honoring the grit and resilience of the region's early pioneers.
Whether you're competing or cheering from the sidelines, the Great Wheelbarrow Race is an unforgettable celebration of history, community spirit, and Queensland’s rugged outback landscape.
