About
Every two years, the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Footscray ignite with the heat of forges and the ring of hammers as the Blacksmiths Festival returns. This vibrant celebration of fire and metal brings together artisans, enthusiasts and curious visitors for a weekend of live forging displays, hands-on workshops and immersive experiences for the whole family.
Watch master blacksmiths shape molten steel in real-time demonstrations or browse the artisan market for hand-forged treasures. The popular Kidsmith Zone invites children under twelve to craft their own keepsakes, while the Blacksmith Games Arena showcases inventive, one-of-a-kind competitions. Visitors can test their skills in a range of workshops, including sessions tailored for women and neurodivergent individuals.
The festival also debuts a special collaborative project led by talented Canadian blacksmith Sandra Dunn. Over five days, she and a team of fourteen metal artisans will forge a sculptural contemplative seat in tribute to the late Councillor Sarah Carter, blending industrial heritage with themes of transformation, playfulness and memory.
New for 2025, Artist Alley will feature eight skilled blacksmiths displaying and selling their creations. With metal art exhibitions, live music, food trucks, mulled wine and craft brews from Hop Nation Brewing, it's the perfect setting to gather around the fire and experience the magic of this ancient craft.
